Please help me help the Cancer Council - 7 Bridges 2026
I’m back again for the 7 Bridges Walk on Sunday 25th October 2026 - another 28km around Sydney Harbour.
Some of you will know that I started doing this many years ago after my wife Venessa was diagnosed with breast cancer.
The good news is that, with thanks to our amazing medical system, researchers, doctors, nurses etc, she has been "cancer free" for over 20 years now. This is only possible due to ongoing research breakthroughs, new treatments, and people being more aware and catching cancers earlier when the outcomes are so much better. Much of the important research is privately funded via donations.
While many cancer stories are painful, and many also do not end well, it's important to recognise the massive steps forward which provide new hope for patients and their families.
Hope.
That is the message I focused on last year when the Cancer Council gave me the honour of renaming the Harbour Bridge for a day. It was the 20th 7 Bridges Walk, and was also the 20th anniversary of Venessa's diagnosis with Breast Cancer. That made it very fitting that her message of hope, which she has been plugging all of that time, gets some recognition. In that time I have lost count of the number of events, large and small, which she has participated in, or organised and hosted: The Avon Walk in New York (a marathon and a half over two days), 7 Bridges Walk, Beers 4 Boobs, Bubbles for Boobs, Bridges 4 Boobs, it goes on and on. The events and her reminders to "Feel on the First" and other awareness campaigns are really important contributions to reducing the impacts of this disease.
Any and all support is greatly appreciated, and obviously goes to many good causes under the Cancer Council umbrella of educating, preventing, supporting, and curing cancer.
Thanks again everyone, but particularly to those who have financially supported my efforts for many years now. My pre-2016 records are a bit shaky, but in the last 10 years (and 2019 was a bust due to the Rugby World Cup in Japan), you all have helped me raise nearly $108,000. Those are numbers which make a real and tangible difference.
Hopefully my good mate Lars will be fit enough to do it with me again ;)
