No bridges too far for this couple WHEN two Casula seniors walked over seven iconic bridges in Sydney recently, it was like climbing Mount Everest. Ruby and Peter Alford, aged 71 and 74, reached the "mountain peak" after walking 27 kilometres. The walk covers Pyrmont, Anzac, Iron Cove, Gladesville, Tarban Creek, Figtree and the Sydney Harbour bridges. Residents of the Aveo Maple Grove Retirement Village in Casula, the couple have always been avid walkers. "We've walked to Carnes Hill and back, to Liverpool and back," Mr Alford said. "We tend to go walking every day to keep fit." When they heard about the marathon event, they decided they wanted to give it a try. Both in good health and full of vitality, they completed the first six bridges. Mrs Alford struggled to go on after that. "But I still wanted to finish and I wanted to do that seventh bridge so we kept going," Mrs Alford said. "I had never been happier to see the Harbour Bridge. "We finished it and there were young people that gave up." Not only did they finish the marathon, they raised $1000 for the Cancer Council from the social group at the retirement village. The couple, who migrated from London in 2005, have both lost family and friends to cancer. They said their friends family are proud of their achievement.
