Elka on a roller-coaster RETIRED Olympic swimmer Elka Whalan (nee Graham) and husband Thomas have both watched their beloved mothers battle breast cancer this year. But since the birth of their first child, daughter Nevada, in July, life has been a little brighter for the sporting couple. Both their mums are responding well to treatment and to mark their inspirational fight, the Whalans will take part in next Sunday's Cancer Council NSW Seven Bridges Walk. "We have friends, family friends who know of people who have cancer, too," Mrs Whalan, 29, said. "We're lucky because my mum is in remission and Thomas's mum's cancer is under control and manageable. "Every Sunday since Nevada has been born the last 16 weeks we always go on a big walk and this event ties in with how fit and healthy we like to keep, so it's great putting the two together and doing it for a wonderful cause." As Mrs Whalan is still breastfeeding, the young family will only participate in a short section of the 25km course, which winds its way through some of Sydney's most impressive harbourside suburbs.
